Malaysia RS Satellites

TIUNGSAT-1TM & RAZAKSATTM

TiungSAT-1 Overview

26th September 2000 goes down as history for our nation as Malaysia's first satellite, TiungSAT-1 was launched in Baikanor, Kazakhstan at 6:05 pm Malaysian Time. TiungSAT-1, named after the mynah bird of Malaysia, was developed as a collaborative effort between the Malaysian government and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd.

World Leading Organizations in Remote Sensing

The Group on Earth Observations is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems, or GEOSS. GEO was launched in response to calls for action by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. These high-level meetings recognized that international collaboration is essential for exploiting the growing potential of Earth observations to support decision making in an increasingly complex and environmentally stressed world. Remote Sensing Technology

Remote sensing is the science (and to some extent, art) of acquiring information about the Earth's surface without actually being in contact with it. This is done by sensing and recording reflected or emitted energy and processing, analyzing, and applying that information.Credit to Natural Resourse Canada

Remote Sensing Application

Earth observation satellites (EOS) are satellites specifically designed to observe Earth from space for:

  • environmental monitoring
  • meteorology
  • map making etc

The observations of the earth using satellites are basically using the Remote Sensing concept.

Background and History

There are many ways we learn about the world around us. We use all of our senses - sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Scientists use all of their senses too. In fact they build instruments that help their senses gather information. They might use a magnifying glass or microscope to look at something very small in order to see more detail.
